Mount Carroll District Library Expands Service Area

All persons residing in the West Carroll School District will soon have access to public library services. The Mount Carroll District Library Board of Trustees, at its regular September 13th board meeting, approved an ordinance to expand its district north and east of Mount Carroll, eliminating the West Carroll School District’s public library service gap. The area includes parts of Salem, Freedom, and Woodland Townships.
“The Mount Carroll District Library has come under increasing pressure over the years to provide materials, electronic access, research assistance and programming to school children and individuals who reside nearby, but outside our boundaries,” said Dan Brinkmeier, President of the Mount Carroll District Library Board. Expansion planning began in 2013 with a series of focus group meetings consisting of community members, board members, and library consultants.
“The library isn’t just about books anymore.” said Pam Naples, Director of the Mount Carroll Library, “The mission of the library is to serve as a gathering place and a gateway to knowledge, community resources, and an opportunity for life-long learning.”
During the past 15 months, 8,414 people visited the library and 2,011 people participated in 241 programs. Over 11,000 items (almost 6 items per hour) were borrowed from the library’s collection of books, e-books, and DVDs. Five public access computers were in constant use. Free, open-access WIFI was used day and night both inside and outside the library building.
By expanding its service area, the Mount Carroll District Library expects to better meet the needs of all patrons. The library will increase hours, services, and programming. In the longer-term, a facilities upgrade and addition to the west side of the current building is planned to provide needed Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility compliance, rest rooms, a meeting room, distance-learning facilities, and space for services, materials, and additional programming.
New patrons are invited to a special event at the library on Saturday, September 23rd at 10:00 am to learn more about the expansion and library services. For more information contact: Pam Naples 815-244-1751
